Blogger National 2024

Well, it's time again for Cards Over Coffee's annual Blogger Bat Around for 2024.

Even though I live between both Cleveland and Chicago, I haven't been able to get to any of the most recent Nationals.

👉 My last National is still the one in Atlanta in the 1990s. 

🐅⚾️ The Detroit Tigers had two All-Stars this season, and, both actually played in the 5-3 American League victory.

⭐️ LHP Tarik Skubal pitched a 1-2-3 2nd inning in his 1st ASG.

⭐️ Outfielder Riley Greene was 0-2, but did make a terrific play in left field in his 1st ASG. 

⭐️ Riley is my favorite baseball player and I try to collect as many of his cards as possible. 

My latest Riley card is easily the coolest of all his cards in my collection.

Tigers Card Tuesday-Gio Urshela Walk-Off

Got to go to Comerica Park on Saturday to watch the Los Angeles Dodgers play my Detroit Tigers.

🐅⚾️ The Tigers trailed the Dodgers by 5 runs (9-4) entering the bottom of the 9th.

Detroit tied the game up in an amazing comeback finished off my a Colt Keith 2-run HR w/ 2-outs to get the game to extra innings. 

Then, after a great double play to retire LA, Gio Urshela, w/ the Dodgers implementing the 6 infielder alignment, hit a 2-run HR to finish off an amazing comeback for the Tigers.

Saturday was so much fun, and I hope to make it back go the Motor City for another fame this season.

Tigers Card Tuesday- 2024 All-Star Riley Greene

Riley Greene will represent the Detroit Tigers is next Tuesdays All-Star Game in Arlington, Texas.

Saturday Stuff, June 15, 2024

I'm hoping that I can do a Saturday Stuff post each week...let's start with what's happening today.

👉 Today's Immaculate Grid was a really good one, as I was able to use nine different Tigers players.

Score of 23, pretty good.

🐅⚾️ Anytime I can use Matthew Boyd and Bill Freehan together is always a good thing.

👉 Working on the never ending job of getting as many cards into binders as I possibly can.

I'm not always healthy enough to give my collection the attention it deserves, but I try my best. 

🐅⚾️ As I'm writing this I'm watching the Tigers game in Houston today. 

👉Former Tigers starter and future HOFer, Justin Verlander, was suppose to start for the Astros today, but was scratched due to neck tightness.

👉 It's 10-0 Tigers, bottom of the 3rd, and my favorite player, Riley Greene, is 3-3, w/ 2 HRs and 5 RBI!

🐅⚾️ I'm trying to keep up with all of Riley's cards, but, it isn't exactly easy.

👉 Tigers win, Riley w/ a career high 4 hits and 6 RBI game! 

⏰️ Well, as usual, got distracted with other things, such as dinner, watching a Hallmark movie w/ my wife, and posting on TweetX etc,and playing some games on my phone.

Fun Card Friday- Not so fun

Getting hit in the face by a baseball traveling 110 mph sure can't be fun, however, it can lead to a post for Fun Card Friday!

Liz McGuire, a young Toronto Blue Jays fan, was hit in the face by a Bo Bichette baseball last Friday, May 17th.

1️⃣1️⃣0️⃣- Topps produced exactly 110 Topps NOW of the above card, and sent all of them to Lizz.

She has put a few of the cards up for auction, w/ some of the proceeds going to Holland Bloorview Childrens Hospital

😊 Topps takes a lot of grief for some if the things they do, and yet, they find a way sometimes to just do a cool thing like this...which is, for myself, is part of why collecting cards is FUN!

Tigers Card Tuesday/Blog Bat Around- The Last Base Card

Going through some cards on Monday while doing much needed binder work, I came across this 1977 Topps that had found it's way into a small box.

🐅⚾️ In 1977, even though he'd already retired from a 15 year big league career, Topps did issue Bill Freehan a card, his final base card.

       My Top 10 Bill Freehan Cards.

👉 In 1976, the 34 year old Freehan, my All-Time favorite ballplayer, played in just 71 games, batting .270, w/ 5 HRs and 27 RBI.

Although still a relatively young man, he retired instead of accepting a trade to the Philadelphia Phillies for a young catcher named Bob Boone. 

🤔 How about you favorite ballplayer and his final base card? 

👉 Do a blog post using that player's last base card that was in a major set of baseball baseball cards, i.e., 1977 Topps.

👉 Blog Bat Around Post Rules-

Must be the last base card issued by Topps, Fleer, Donruss, Upper Deck, etc, for that player.

👉 No Inserts, Relic, Autographed, or specially made cards, no new releases, or buybacks.

Fun Card Friday- Hot Diggity Dogs

It's a new post idea that I though would be cool for Fridays, so, what the heck, let's give it a try.

The New York Mets had a great promotion on May 1st and it also tuned out to be a record night at Citi Field.

🌭🌭🌭🌭🌭🌭🌭🌭🌭🌭🌭🌭🌭🌭🌭

The Metropolitan Baseball Club of New York sold hot dogs for just $1.00.

Mets fans consumed a NEW record of 44,269 hot dogs, twice as many as the previous record.

🌭 Topps sold the cards the next to collectors for One Dollar,  and collectors ate them up w/ a print run of 44, 270.

🌭 There were 99 Ketchup/Mustard cards that were inserted along w/ the regular card.

🤦‍♂️ I did NOT receive a hot dog card w/ Ketchup/Mustard. 

⚾️ I really like the card, it was a brilliant job by both the Mets and by Topps... hey, collecting cards is supposed to be fun, right?

Sure, it's only been 5 starts, however, those five starts for Tarik Skubal have led me to use him for a new post for Tigers Card Tuesday!

The Tigers ACE is a way to early AL Cy Young candidates, and, hopefully, he'll  keep it up and head to the All-Star Game in Arlington, Texas on July 16th.

Card Show Saturday

Had a quick trip down the roads of Kalamazoo yesterday for the last hour of a card show at the Kazoo Expo Center.

👉 It's been tough physically for me the past few weeks, but I wanted to make sure to see Dennis after he drove all the way from Ann Arbor. 

👉 I found a few individual cards to get, plus, I picked up a blaster of 2023 Topps Heritage from Jeff  of Sluggo's Sports Cards. 

👉 No Tigers cards in the box, but, still its always fun opening up packs of baseball cards.

💛💙⚾️ Getting JakeCronenworth cards is always a good thing.

😎 Jake is currently batting. 286, w/ 6 HRs in 42 games this season.

Blog Bat Around/Happy Baseball Birthday! Sarah Langs

Today is a very special Happy Baseball Birthday! / Blog Bat Around post as we celebrate an amazing baseball fan, Sarah Langs. 

Sarah, who's turning 31 today, is a baseball fan and MLB.com /MLB Network researcher who probably knows more about the games history than I do, even though I'm 30+ years older.

👉 On May 2, 1939, at old Briggs Stadium in Detroit, Lou Gehrig's then MLB Record of 2,130 consecutive baseball games played was stopped when he could no longer play because of his health. 

⚾️ Please, if you can, make a BBA post for Sarah today, I'd really appreciate it.

Sarah was diagnosed with ALS, Lou Gehrig's Disease in 2022, and, yet, she still smiles each and every day for us while tweeting/posting the stats that we fans need to know.

           ⚾️ Baseball Is The BEST! ⚾️

Tigers Card Tuesday-Riley Greene Relic

Watching the Tigers take on the Cardinals this afternoon in Game 1 of a straight double header vs STL after last night's rain out.

🐅⚾️ In the top of the 4th inning, Detroit's best player, Riley Greene, homered off Cardinals starting pitcher Kyle Gibson. giving Detroit a 1-0 lead.
