Mariano Rivera

I saw this special patch for Yankees closer Mariano Rivera today and I had to put it on the blog.

ESPN Sports Biz guru Darren Rovell revealed  the patch earlier today on his Twitter feed.

New Era will be selling the special Rivera Yankees ball cap soon, as reported on Hardballtalk.com.

Now I'm no fan of the Bronx Bombers, but I wouldn't mind having the patch, or the hat itself.

Rivera is in his final big league season, closing out the greatest career ever by a big league relief man.

In 19 seasons, all in Yankee Pinstripes, Rivera has a big league record 633 saves, in an amazing 1,080 appearances.

I can remember when Rivera was the set up man for John Wetteland when New York won the 1996 World Series.

Wetteland left for free agency after the '96 season, and Rivera became the Yankees closer.

Everything comes to an end, especially in sports, and in big league baseball, after the 2013 season, their will be no more "enter the Sandman."

Tigers Torii Hunter hits HR #300

Torii Hunter of the Detroit Tigers hit HR #300 of his career today, in Minnesota, as the Tigers beat the Twins, Hunter's original big league club, 5-2.

It's only fitting that Hunter hit #300 as a member of the Tigers vs. the Twins, seeing that he hit his 1st ever home run as a young Twins outfielder against the Tigers.

Happy Baseball Birthday...Tony Clark

Today's Happy Baseball Birthday! is former Detroit Tigers 1st Baseman Tony Clark.

Tony Clark was born on June 15th, 1972, in Newton, Kansas, and played high school baseball and basketball in San Diego, California.

We was a two sport star at San Diego Sate University when the Tigers came calling.

The Tigers selected Clark with their #1 pick, (2nd overall), in the 1990 Amateur Draft, and signed Tony on July 10, 1990.

Clark made his big league debut on September 3rd, 1995, and after the Tigers traded Cecil Fielder to the Yankees in 1996, the first base job was his.

In 27 games after his call- up Tony hit 3 home runs, with 11 RBI in 109 plate appearances.

Tony Clark is one of my favorite Tiger first baseman.

I had the chance to see the Tigers play in Tampa a few times when Tony was with the team.

Opening Day 1998, I sat high up in the stands at Tropicana Field as the Tigers welcomed the then Tampa Bay Devil Rays into big league baseball with a 11-6 Detroit victory, as Clark went 2-5 with 2 runs scored.

I still have this thing, handed out at the game.

I was also in Tampa on August 1st, 1998, as Tony  hit two home runs...one RH, one LH, against the Devil Rays, his 24th and 25th long balls of the year, in a Tigers 8-0 shutout.

Tony Clark hit home runs from both sides of the plate 7 times, 6 times as a member of the Tigers, beginning with his 2-dinger game at Comiskey Park in Chicago on April 5th, 1997.

The game I attended in '98 was one of three times that season that Tony hit home runs from both sides of the plate.

For seven big league seasons Tony Clark hit 156 home runs for the Tigers, with 514 RBI, a .277 batting average, 783 hits...343 walks...in 772 games with Detroit.

Tony's best seasons in Motown were 1996-99, when he hit 27, 32,34, and 31 home runs, and collected 72, 117, 103, and 99 RBI.

Tony played with the Tigers through the 2001 season, then moved on to play with the Red Sox, Diamondbacks, Mets, Yankees, and Padres.

In 2005 Tony had another 30 HR season, as a member of the Diamondbacks, collecting 87 RBI while batting a career high .304.

In 15 big league baseball seasons, Tony played in 1.559 games, collected 1,188 base hits, 251 home runs, 824 RBI, with a .262 batting average.

Happy Baseball Birthday!  to Tony "The Tiger" Clark!

Tigers Miguel Cabrera and Price Fielder are this weeks SI Cover boys

This week's Sports Illustrated cover celebrates the awesome Motown power of the Detroit Tigers slugging combo of third baseman Miguel Cabrera and first baseman Prince Fielder.

Cabrera is the reining Triple Crown Champion and American League Most Valuable Player, and is the current MLB leader in batting average, .363, RBI, 69, hits, 91, and is 3rd in slugging  %, at .645.

Fielder is batting .282 this year, with 12 HR, 51 RBI, a .494 slugging %, and an on base % of .385.

I always like it when SI decides to put baseball on the cover, especially when it's the Tigers, which rarely happens.

The last Tiger cover boy, I believe, was Justin Verlander.

We are in a terrific period of Tigers baseball, with the last two A. L. MVPs in Verlander (also the 2011 Cy Young Award winner) and Cabrera, with a future MVP in Fielder, and a future Cy Young Award Winner in RHP Max Scherzer.

Scherzer beat the Royals last night, improving his record to 9-0, with 106 Ks, and a 3.28 ERA.

I can't wait to go out and get my copy.

Go Tigers!

D-Day, the 6th of June

Today is the 69th Anniversary of the Allied Invasion of Europe, D-Day, June 6th, 1944.

Baseball players had already joined up to serve in the Navy, Army, and Marine Corps after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, on December 7th, 1941.

Players such as Hank Greenberg, Bob Feller, Ted Williams, Joe DiMaggio, and others, served for many years, some until the end of the war.

Two big league ballplayers were involved in the D-Day invasion, Yogi Berra, and Leon Day.

All baseball games were cancelled by Commissioner Kennesaw Mountain Landis on June 6th, 1944.

In January 1942 President Franklin Roosevelt sent a letter to baseball Commissioner Landis stating he wanted the National Pastime to continue.

That letter is known as the  "Green Light Letter."

In the letter FDR states... "... I honestly feel that it would be best for the country to keep baseball going."

Today we pause to remember the Men and Women who fought for our freedom on that historic day as the Allied Forces landed on the beaches of Normandy, Utah, Gold, and Sword.

May God Bless all our military Men and Women serving America today, in this country, and abroad.

Today's Baseball Birthday...Rick Wilkins

Today's Baseball Birthday is former big league catcher and Jacksonville, Florida native Rick Wilkins.

Richard David Wilkins was born in Jacksonville on June 4th, 1967.

Rick played High School baseball at The Bolles School here in Jacksonville, then played college baseball at Florida College, now Florida State College, here in Jax., and then on to play for the Purple Paladins of Furman.

Rick was the Chicago Cubs 23rd round selection in 1986, and made his big league debut for the Cubs on June 6th, 1991.

Rick played 11 seasons in the big leagues, for the Cubs, Giants, Mariners, Astros, Mets, Cardinals, Dodgers, and Padres, batting .244, with 81 home runs and 275 RBIs in 720 games.

Rick was a terrific catcher, posting a .992 career fielding fielding percentage, making just 31 errors in 4,127 chances.

Rick has returned to his hometown here in Jax., running his foundation and baseball academy.

I had the honor to meet and work with Rick Wilkins when I was a restaurant manager here in Jax.

Rick Wilkins is a awesome guy, and I enjoyed working with him during several catering's for his foundation.

A finer person you will not meet.

Happy Baseball Birthday! Rick Wilkins..... PLAY BALL!

My Big League Power Rankings...May 28th, 2013

Every week baseball writers and bloggers across the country submit a big league power rankings list, some just the top five teams, some top 10, and many all 30 big league teams.

So, I was figuring I'd try to do a list myself, and I figured, heck, why not be bold, include all 30 clubs.

In no way am I saying this is the correct list, it's just my list.

So, here it is, the first ever JBLBB Power Rankings, teams 1-30.

30...Miami Marlins
29...Houston Astros
28...Milwaukee Brewers
27...Minnesota Twins
26...Chicago Cubs
25... New York Mets
24... Los Angeles Dodgers
23...Seattle Mariners
22...Toronto Blue Jays
21...San Diego Padres
20...Kansas City Royals
19...Philadelphia Phillies
18...Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim
17...Chicago White Sox

The above teams are all the teams with losing records though yesterday's games.(Memorial Day).

The Marlins are setting the bar very low in their play, and really need Giancarlo Stanton and Logan Morrison to get back from injuries to get the team going.

Morrison has joined the Marlins Double A squad in Jacksonville to continue his rehab.

Before all you ChiSox and Angels fans get mad, understand that I had to pool all the teams with losing records together.

I suspect in a week, or two, both teams will be on a winning streak, and look, the ChiSox are only 5 games back in the A.L. Central.

As for the Dodgers, well, a 13-15 record at home just isn't good.

Now for the teams with winning records.

This is tough, but here they are...

16...Cleveland Indians
15...Colorado Rockies
14...Tampa Bay Rays
13...Washington Nationals
12... Baltimore Orioles
11...Oakland A's
10...Pittsburgh Pirates
9...New York Yankees
8...Detroit Tigers
7...San Francisco Giants
6...Arizona Diamondbacks
5...Texas Rangers
4...Boston Red Sox
3...Atlanta Braves
2...Cincinnati Reds
1...St. Louis Cardinals

Year after year the St. Louis Cardinals find a way to win, and they have the best record in baseball, at 33-17.

The Reds are playing well and keeping the Redbirds in their sights.

I have the Yankees at #9.

No Derek Jeter, no Alex Rodriguez, and after a brief comeback, no Curtis Granderson.

The Yankees do have Mariano Rivera, who's perfect, as usual, saving games for the Pinstripers, and Joe Girardi is the A.L. Manager of the Year as of today.

I have the defending World Series Champion SF Giants at #7, which is right where they like to be, I think, while other teams make headlines early before they start to make their move.

Well, agree, or disagree, there's my poll, from the bottom dwelling Miami Marlins to the Cardinals in St. Louis.

Comments are welcome anytime, after all, I'm no expert, just a baseball fan giving my humble opinion.

Good Luck to your team...and Go Tigers!

Baseball fan Willie Robertson on The Dan Patrick Show 5/24/13

Duck Dynasty is one of my favorite shows on TV, a show about good guys, working hard, loving life, drinking sweet tea, and having faith in God and family.

Uncle Si was my favorite Robertson from Day 1, well before I saw this...

Uncle SI was channeling his inner Magnum, P.I. in Hawaii, wearing the "Olde English D" Detroit Tigers cap.

Today on the Dan Patrick Show, Willie Robertson, Duck Dynasty CEO, talked a bit about  baseball being "his sport", and that he was friends with Washington Nationals 1B Adam LaRoche.

Willie Roberston told Dan Patrick the next season of Duck Dynasty is filming now and should be on again in September.

I would like to thank all the great guys involved with the Dan Patrick show for putting on a quality sports show each and every day.

Thanks to Dan and the Danettes for making my morning wake up a thing to look forward to.

Happy Baseball Birthday...Ozzie Virgil Sr.

Today's Baseball Birthday is former New York/San Francisco Giants, Baltimore Orioles, Pittsburgh Pirates, Kansas City Athetics,  and Detroit Tigers 3rd Baseman Ozzie Virgil, Sr.

Osvaldo Jose Virgil was born on this date, May 17th, in 1932.

I wanted to write today about Ozzie Virgil as soon as I saw that today Ozzie is celebrating his 81st Birthday.

Ozzie Virgil made his big league debut on September 23rd, 1956 for the  New York Baseball Giants, the first player born in the Dominican Republic to play big league baseball.

In nine years in the big leagues Ozzie batted .231, collecting 174 big league hits, with 14 home runs and 73 RBI.

Ozzie Virgil is a very special baseball player to me.

He's the first African-American to play baseball for my favorite team, the Detroit Tigers, in 1958.

1958.

In his first game as a Tiger Ozzie Virgil went 5 for 5.

In three years with the Tigers, '58 ,'60', '61, Ozzie batted .228 in 131 games, collecting 81 hits, 7 HRs, and 33 RBI.

Those numbers don't seem like much, but Ozzie Virgil will always be part of Detroit Tigers history, the first black man to play for the Tigers.

The Tigers were one of the last teams to integrate players of color into the organization.

Ozzie Virgil's Tigers debut in 1958 came 11 full years after Jackie Robinson broke the baseball color barrier on April 15th, 1947.

The Tigers, like many other big league clubs, continued to ignore the situation, refusing to sign African-American ball players.

Only the Boston Red Sox kept the Tigers from total embarrassment.

Boston was the last big league team to have a African-American player.

Pumpsie Green made his BoSox debut on July 21st, 1959, just 13 months after Ozzie Virgil donned a Detroit uniform.

The Tigers, like every other big league ball club, could have had had players like Hank Aaron, Willie Mays, Don Newcombe, Roy Campanella, or Frank Robinson.

How about an outfield of Henry Aaron, Frank Robinson, and  Al Kaline for the late '50s Tigers?

Imagine that.

I'm sure young, black ball players, growing up in the Detroit area, like Willie Horton, saw Ozzie playing for his hometown team and believed that they could one time be a big league ball player.

Ozzie Virgil's legacy in baseball continued with his son.

Ozzie's son, Ozzie Virgil, Jr., was a big league catcher, playing for the Phillies, Braves, and Blue Jays in his 11 year career.

Today we celebrate the birthday of Ozzie Virgil, a special player, a special man.

Happy Birthday Ozzie!
