George Thomas Seaver, 1944-2020

The man known as "Tom Terrific," Tom Seaver, passed away on Monday, at the age of 75.

Seaver, who won 311 games, with the Mets, Reds, White Sox, and Red Sox, was a 3-time Cy Young Award Winner, a World Series Champion.

Seaver was also a terrific broadcaster after his career, doing games nationally, and for both the Mets and the Yankees.

In 1980, a friend of mine drove us to Cincinnati to watch Seaver pitch against the Dodgers.

On Saturday, August 9th, we were two of 45, 095 at Riverfront Stadium, as Jerry Reuss and the Dodgers beat Seaver and the Reds, 9-4.

➡️ Also playing in that game were a who's who of terrific ballplayers that I grew up watching.

For the Dodgers, they still had the great infield of Steve Garvey, Davey Lopes, Bill Russell, and Ron Cey, as well as outfielders Dusty Baker and Rick Monday.

Reuss pitched 6 innings, relieved by a young, future Cy Young winner named Rick Sutcliffe.

As for the Reds, they had a lineup that included members of the "Big Red Machine" of the 1970s, Johnny Bench, Ken Griffey, Dave Concepcion, George Foster, and Dan Driessen, the first ever designated hitter in World Series play, in 1976.

I lived in Jacksonville, Florida, for 36 years, and loved going to Suns games, watching future HOF players at old Wolfson Park, where a young Tom Seaver pitched in 1966.

The 1966 JAX Suns also had legendary Mets players like "Choo Choo" Coleman and Tug Mcgraw, and Bus Harrelson.

Tom Seaver had his #41 retired by the Mets in 1988.

➡️ Today in honor of the man known as "The Franchise," the players on Topps BUNT received a "41" avatar.

To the family, friends, fans, and teammates of Tom Seaver, please accept my condolences on your loss.

May God bless Tom, and his family. 🙏

  1. Sad week for baseball fans. Rest in peace Mr. Seaver. I knew you were a superstar... but when I took a closer look at your numbers today, I was really blown away.
