Football Card Friday... Happy 50th Desmond Howard.

Today's Football Card Friday! celebrates the 50th Birthday of 1991 Heisman Trophy winner Desmond Howard.

This 1992 Classic is one of the best looking football cards of my lifetime... Go BLUE! 



I was very excited to collect Desmond's football cards after his amazing Junior year at Michigan, and I did my best to collect as many as I could.

Through his decade plus in the NFL, Desmond was an average player, who had his moments, and in one year in Green Bay, in 1996, he had his career year.

No matter what, being a 1st Team All-American, Heisman winner, and Super Bowl Champion and Super Bowl MVP  is a pretty good football career.

Tigers Card Tuesday... Hal Newhouser

I'm writing this very late, so I'm digital with today's Tigers Card Tuesday.


The Topps BUNT App provides this week's card with Tigers Hall of Fame pitcher, "Prince Hal" Newhouser.

The card is part of the "Southpaws" series on the app, which commences with a Babe Ruth Award Card.

I was hoping that the Tigers player in this set would be Matt Boyd, or Mickey Lolich, but I really like that they used the image of the 2 -time American League MVP.

Tigers Card Tuesday: 1975 Topps Cards

The 1975 Topps Baseball Card set is one of the best sets of cards produced, and is the basis for this week's Tigers Card Tuesday. 

The Tigers cards in the set include Willie Horton, Mickey Stanley, John Hiller, Mickey Lolich, and, of course, Bill Freehan.

The great Al Kaline had this awesome card in the '75 Topps Set.

3️⃣0️⃣0️⃣0️⃣ Kaline collected his 3,000th base hit in his hometown of Baltimore, Maryland, on September 24, 1974.

I've been competing in a contest over on Twitter involving the entire '75 Topps set, and as I saw the cards come up, I realized that I was missing some of the Tigers cards.

Over the last 40 years I've moved many times, and have had the cards in storage, and I guess they've gotten lost.

 ▶️  I also came across this post on the 1975 set from Red Sox fan Section 36.

There's so many great cards in the 1975 set, including this famous RC.

When I played Little League baseball in the early '70s, I knew Leon Roberts brother, Mark, who also went to Portage Northern High School (Leon's Alma Mater) with me.

👀 Leon also played college baseball at the University of Michigan, so, he hits the fan trifecta, Portage Northern,  Michigan, and the Tigers.

I love talking about card from my childhood as a baseball fan and card collector, it makes me happy, and at my age, that's a good thing

The Boyd Binder- First Relic Card

Today is a memorable day in my history of collecting Detroit Tigers cards.


Today's mail brought me my first Relic Card of my favorite Lefty pitcher, Matthew Boyd.

As soon as I saw the checklist of this year's Topps Series 1, and that Boyd was getting his first Relic card I was very excited, and, when I opened up the pwe, well, I felt like a little boy again, and not the 60 year old man that I am today.


It is a little sad though, because there's no games to watch the Tigers play, or to watch Boyd pitch, but I know that eventually, things will get back to normal.

My picture taking isn't very good, and I have no scanner, so I always try and find a picture from ye olde Internet, as I posted above.

Here's my Matthew Boyd 2020 Series One Relic Card that I received today.

Happy Baseball Birthday... Miguel Cabrera

Just a quick post to wish a Happy Baseball Birthday! to the great Miguel Cabrera.

I LOVE cards of Tigers players wearing the old Detroit Stars uniforms! 


It's April 18th, and we were supposed to be watching the 20th baseball game of 2020 with the slim downed Miggy on the road to 500 HRs and 3,000 hits.

Currently, Miggy sets at 477 home runs, and 2, 815 career base hits.

I hope this Coronavirus (Covid-19) gets beaten down so we can all get back to a sense of normality, including watching the great game of baseball.

Albert William Kaline, 1934-2020

The man known as "Mr Tiger," Al Kaline, passed away on Monday at the age of 85.

I started to write this post on Monday night, but between trying to figure out what to say to honor Al Kaline, and my health, the post was put on hold.

Albert William Kaline was born in Baltimore, Maryland on December 19, 1934.

Kaline signed with the Detroit Tigers right out of High School, at age 18, never played a day in the minor leagues, playing all 22 years with the Tigers.

In 1955 Kaline won the American League Batting Title with a .340 average, collecting exactly 200 base hits.

For 67 years, from the day he signed out of high school, to the moment he passed away, Al Kaline was a Tiger.

His passion for the game, the grace at which he played the game, and the grace at which he carried himself as a broadcaster, mentor, and advisor, is why he is now, and always will be, the  image of the club, and why he will always be, Mr. Tiger.🐯⚾

Rest in Peace, Al Kaline. 

Happy Baseball Birthday... Phil Niekro

Today we send out Happy Baseball Birthday! wishes to Hall of Fame pitcher Phil Niekro.


The 24 year big league hurler known as "Knucksie" turns 81 today.

Phillip Henry Niekro was born in Blaine, Ohio, on April 1, 1939,  played high school baseball at Bridgeport HS in Ohio, turned down college offers to pursue pro baseball, and signed with the Milwaukee Braves on July 19, 1958.


Niekro's  first black type on the back of his baseball card was his National League leading 1.87 ERA in 1967.

Phil would go on to win 318 games in the big leagues, striking out 3,342 batters pitching for the Braves, Indians, and Blue Jays.

Tigers Card Tuesday... Digital Niko Goodrum

Tigers Card Tuesday goes digital today with a cool autographed card of Tigers utility player extrordinare, Nico Goodrum.

Last Saturday I was fortunate enough to get Nico to digitally sign the above photo of his 2019 Topps Stadium Club card by way of Twitter.

Pretty cool, right?


▶️ With the baseball season on hold until the Coronavirus pandemic is defeated, big league clubs on social media are finding creative ways to interact with their fans.

🐯My Detroit Tigers are having Signature Saturdays, asking fans to connect with players by posting baseball pictures and asking a designated player to sign their favorites.


I hope to be able to acquire a Tigers players signatures each Saturday, especially when my guy Matt Boyd is involved.

Tigers Card Tuesday...Best Baseball Card of 2020. (So Far)

To call any card issued in the first two months of the baseball card season the card of the year is getting way ahead of ourselves.

Usually.

The best card so far is gonna be awfully hard to beat out, and if it happens, well, that's going to be one heck of a baseball card.

BOOM! 

   🐯 Topps Series 1 #57, Travis Demeritt 🐯

I know I'm a Tigers fan, but as soon as I saw the image of this card on eBay, well, I thought, hey, this shot never happens to a Tigers player.

To make the card even better, Demeritt is coming out of the home dugout wearing the the beautiful Detroit Stars uniform from Negro League weekend. 


Travis Demeritt was acquired by my Detroit Tigers at last year's trading deadline, July 31, from the Atlanta Braves.... pretty cool that Topps got this shot and was able to get it into Series 1 .


I'm a positive baseball fan, and I like the way these young guys in the Detroit outfield play, and have fun playing.

Hey, there not Cobb, Kaline, or Heilmann, but they're the guys putting on the Olde English D, and  that's good enough to make me root for you.


We'll see our heroes play baseball at some time again, until that happens, keep collecting and posting on your awesome blogs.

➡️ I've gotten two of these cards of Travis so far.

I got one from eBay, and then, soon after it arrived, I got a hot pack with six Tigers players in the pack, including this cool RC of the Tigers right fielder.

It's gonna be fun trying to acquire as many of the rainbow versions of this beautiful card. 👍
